Sociodigital Transformation towards Excellent Leadership and Labour (eLLa4.0)

Key words: Management, Work Organisation, Learning and Development of Competences

Project duration: 01.09.2019 - 31.08.2022

Project funding:

The research project is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) within the program „The future of work“. The research project is co-financed by the European Social Fund (ESF) and supervised by the Project Management Agency Karlsruhe (PTKA) in the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology.

Project description (short):

The project eLLa4.0 enables executive leaders to shape and manage sociodigital systems by developing interaction competence and enable them to exploit the potentials of digitisation for excellent labour.

Co-operation partners:

  • FIR e. V. an der RWTH Aachen
  • Fraunhofer-Institut für Arbeitswirtschaft und Organisation IAO
  • DMG Mori Spare Parts GmbH
  • BEUMER Group GmbH & Co. KG
  • BELFOR DeHaDe GmbH

Project goals:

eLLa4.0 aims to enable executive leaders to shape and manage sociodigital systems through the development of interaction competence and to enable them to exploit the potentials of digitisation for excellent labour. For this purpose, appropriate management concepts and qualification activities for various target groups will be developed and consolidated in a certification course called “Excellent Sociodigital Leadership”. In addition, new learning concepts for the qualification of executive leaders will be attempted. The Social Research Centre (SFS) Dortmund coordinates the project.

Project description (long):

The individual understanding of leadership and the skills of executive leaders in different hierarchical positions have a crucial influence on the question, to which extent potentials of digitisation can be extrapolated for realising excellent labour. Currently, executive leaders have to cope with challenges that emerge from the permanent change of the interdependent dimensions human, technology and organisation within companies. Digitisation processes have to be shaped and managed in order to enable employees to participate and to perform their work in a way that promotes their personal development. This can only succeed, if the interaction structure of human, technology and organisation is recognized and managed as a sociodigital system.

The research project eLLa4.0 empowers executive leaders to manage sociodigital systems through the development of interaction competences and the extrapolation of potentials of digitisation for excellent labour.

The results of the project allow executive leaders from various sectors to anticipate the consequences of their own interventions into the sociodigital structure. Furthermore, the results enable the executive leaders to reflect effects of the interventions on the working conditions. In this way, wrong choices regarding the digital change can be avoided and decision uncertainties can be minimized. Conversely, technologies can be more easily configured and selected to support excellent labour.

Methodological approach:

Qualitative expert interviews are used to investigate which new challenges and qualification requirements for executive leaders emerge within the process of digitisation. Aspects like leadership concepts, leadership competences or the understanding of leadership roles are scientifically analysed. Besides, the project investigates transformation processes in the sociodigital interaction structure between human-technology-organization in the participating firms (production and service). In this context, concrete requirements are identified and relevant shaping-measures for management and leadership are derived. The results will be compiled and evaluated in prototypical case studies. As a result of the expert interviews and case studies, target-group-specific qualification offers as well as a guideline to establish interaction competence will be developed and integrated into the Demonstration Factory in Aachen and the Future Work Lab in Stuttgart to support qualification.
