Social innovation as the driving force behind the development of cities

Dmitri Domanski spoke upon the invitation of the Social Innovation Acceleration in Cities (SIAC) network about social innovation ecosystems on local level. At the meeting in Innsbruck on 27-28 October 2016 the discussion was all about the importance of social innovation for cities.

What are social innovation ecosystems and how do they look like in cities? How can such ecosystems be developed? What are the roles of different societal sectors in fostering social innovation ecosystems on local level? Dmitri Domanski, researcher at TU Dortmund University – sfs, focused on these questions at the meeting of the SIAC network. As he outlined during his presentation, the issue of social innovation ecosystems is becoming increasingly important in cities and regions, but also more research on this topic is needed.

SIAC brings together experts from research and practice in order to work on issues related to social innovation in cities in application-oriented ways. The network was established two years ago by several partners of the European project SEiSMiC (Societal Engagement in Science, Mutual Learning in Cities), which focused on urban problems by engaging citizens, identifying social innovation needs and contributing to future urban policies and research strategies.
